Mathematics

The study of mathematics is mandatory from Kindergarten to Year 10.

By studying mathematics, students learn to work mathematically – developing fluency, understanding, problem-solving, reasoning and communication skills.

The syllabus consists of the following strands:

  • number and algebra
  • measurement and geometry
  • statistics and probability.

Fort Street is well resourced to deliver a hands-on active Mathematics program. Lessons are designed to move students from a concrete to an abstract understanding of concepts explored in line with the expectations of the NSW Mathematics Syllabus. Teachers track students along the NSW Numeracy Progression, with an emphasis on additive strategies (the strategies students use to add and subtract numbers) in K-2.

Fort Street provides extracurricular stage-based Maths Clubs for gifted and talented students. Students in Years 5 and 6 are selected to complete annually in the Maths Olympiad against other top mathematicians in Australia and New Zealand.

Fort Street facilitates the use of Mathletics for students at home.
