Feral Futures

Sustainability

On Thursday 27 May, the Sustainability Team, consisting of 8 students across Stages 2 and 3, participated in the Kids’ Conference Future Focus Event, Feral Futures. There were many schools that attended the virtual event, including schools from New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland and some from New Zealand. The topics presented ranged from Brumbies in the Snowy Mountains, a Boulder Copper Butterfly Project, Feral Cats to Wild Dogs. Our topic was the mitigation of feral animals in Sydney and their impact on Indigenous land. We learnt so much to prepare for this day! What a journey it was. Mrs Peel-Yates came to see all the hard work we had put together and we think she was pretty impressed. We want to thank Ms Browse for guiding and teaching us along the way.

The presenters were Dylan (Cyan), Caitlin (Amber), Sophie (Indigo) and Athena (Citrine) and the technicians were Mia and Scout (Lime), Allegra (Indigo) and Katherine (Citrine). Here are some of our reflections from the day:

“I enjoyed listening to Orange High School's presentation about brumbies and the “Save the Snowys” campaign. One thing I felt successful about was that I spoke really well in the conference. From other presenting schools, I learnt that sometimes Brumbies can affect tree frogs.” - Caitlin

“I enjoyed watching my team give a solid presentation.” - Allegra

“I enjoyed learning about butterflies from Burnside Public School in New Zealand. When I presented, I succeeded in making good eye contact and Ms Browse said I was calm and collected.” - Dylan

“I enjoyed learning about wild dogs and cats. I loved posting questions on the discussion forum for other schools to see and respond to. I learnt that the spotted tree frog is critically endangered because of brumbies trampling their homes.” - Katherine

“I loved the lolly frogs Ms Browse gave out for brain power and spending my birthday with the team.” - Scout

“I enjoyed it when we answered the questions at the end of our presentation. I learnt that ferals can kill native animals and native plants. I got to speak a fair bit in our presentation and I enjoyed it.” - Athena

“I loved listening to Blacktown North and Orange High School’s presentations. I felt successful for all my teammates and for Ms Browse. We had a fantastic day of learning.” - Mia

“There are 15 000 brumbies in the Snowy mountains. I didn’t realise how many pest animals arrived with the first fleet.” - Sophie
